Investing in your website

Most people know the reasons why they should invest in their website but may not know how to invest, either their time or money. After the initial cost of getting a website developed, what’s next?

Gain feedback from your users

I think this is number one. Don’t just ask your friends and family, actually ask the people who are using your website what they think. Having a blog, forum, or other online feedback mechanism built into your website can be useful. However you can also send an email or talk to some of your customers about what they like and don’t like. Developing a questionnaire maybe helpful.  There are also online tools specially designed just for this purpose, Kampyle is one of them, you should see a link for this in the bottom right corner, you can register for the free version here.

Develop a Web Marketing Strategy

Explore strategies and techniques that you can use on the Internet that will enhance and support your business’s overall marketing objectives. A great way to gain both feedback and promote your website at the same time is to join some relevant social networking groups on LinkedIn or Facebook and ask them what they think about your website.

Take what you have learned and put it into action

Armed with the knowledge of what your users like and don’t like, you can start improving your website to better suit their needs. Take what you have learned and talk to your web designer or developer. They may have some ideas to make things even better. Start the cycle again and keep engaging with your online community.

Now you have read that it would be great if you could leave a comment.  Maybe you can give me some advice on how to make this better.

Free Project Management Tool | ClockingIT

Over the last few years I found myself in a position of needing to manage a number of projects.  I had used Microsoft project in the past, but I found this to be way to complex for my needs and after being on the receiving end of what other project managers had given me in the past I was already glazing over at the prospect.

All I needed was a way to quickly create, assign tasks and track the time taken. I also knew that having an online web based system would be very beneficial.

My priorities were as follows:

  • Need to work online and be shared with clients and staff
  • Be able to track time
  • Budget was limited, so free or open source was important and to we needed the ability to install on own servers

After much trial and error over the course of a few weeks I eventually settled with ClockingIT. This is the perfect project management system for small teams and can I highly recommend that anyone looking for a new system checks it out before making any decisions.

Corporate Email Solutions

Everyone seems to have their preferred system of dealing with email. For personal email most people use Yahoo, Hotmail or Google mail. The problem that businesses face is that these services are inadequate.

What are the options?

If you are in a large organisation it is most likely that you already using Microsoft Exchange for your server and Outlook for your email client.  At HyperStream we use Google Apps and Google Mail. It does everything we need for email and contact management and integrates nicely with our Mobile Phones. Another solution called Zimbra is also very good and quite popular in educational establishments as it is Open Source.

Benefits of using Google Apps

  • Best spam filtering that we have seen
  • Smooth integration with Mobiles
  • Share your calender with people outside of your domain
  • List email in threaded conversational view
  • Super fast email searching
  • Loads of  customization options
  • Access email from anywhere, and any device

Although Google Apps is excellent for most businesses, it may not always be  suitable for every situation. For very large organizations with complex infrastructures Google Apps may seem very expensive, before such a decision is made we recommend doing a review of your current costs including IT Staff cost, server maintenance, etc. You can use The Google saving calculator.

Zimbra

Zimbra is unique as it is the only Open Source solution solution here. It’s a very customisable solution with lots of great features, you can check out a demo here.

Would we recommend it? If you have a large organisation and the hardware to support it then it could be a great solution compared to Exchange,  Zimbra is definitely worth investigation and could save you money.

Exchange has been around for ages and is not going anywhere. It can be a very powerful Mail Server if maintained well, it can cause lots of problems, like bloated in-boxes, and historically backing up all that data has been painful.  Still that said if your organisation is purely running Microsoft products and never intend to change to a mixed environment then maybe you would be better off sticking with it.

Essentially any of these system can work well if setup the right way. If you have over 10 users we recommended that you consult a professional who can recommend the right solution for your business.

London Business Awards 2009

I just got back from the Archant London Business Awards and East London Business Place networking event held in the Archant offices in Ilford. Although free professional social networking tools like LinkedIn are great and can help you build relations on a more global scale, I feel that it’s important to meet people face to face now and again. Events like these help get me out of my Internet bubble.

I’d just like to thank all the speakers and especially last years winner Alexandra Kelly — Powerchex for inspiring us to have a go at entering the Awards.

Good luck to all the entrants.
